Vkontakte (vk.com) is a Russian social network that has been operating since 2006 and if we were to compare it to another global social network, we would agree to compare it to Facebook. As the name of this Russian social network already suggests, Vkontakte in translation means “In contact”.
Like Facebook, this most visited social network in Russia and Ukraine was created for teenagers. Nowadays, however, we can already see older generations on this social network, as the overall user interface is very simple, and this is a significant advantage compared to other, more complex social networks, which this generation welcomes.
Thanks to all the efforts, this growing network managed to overtake the then competitor ODNOKLASSNIKI.RU at the end of 2009, thereby increasing its popularity sharply. Today, it is also translated into Czech and boasts a wide range of translations available in world languages.
As of 2013, nearly 200 million users are registered on Vkontakte, of which about 100 thousand are Czech. Interestingly, only 5% of the population uses Facebook’s competition on Russian territory.
