The international cooperation ICANN recently approved the application that was submitted for the creation of another national Cyrillic domain in the .РУС zone. The application has already passed the initial review, which is the most important stage for creating a new domain. The rest of the process is just a formal matter. So, the .РУС domain may appear on the Internet already at the end of 2013.
In April of this year, ICANN plans to approve several dozen more national domains, including Cyrillic domains for Russia: . МОСКВА, .ДЕТИ (as part of the project to create the so-called “Internet for children”), .САЙТ and .ОНЛАЙН. According to experts, the existence of new zones will allow website owners to choose a nicer and at the same time concise name. In addition, it will significantly reduce the price of domain registration in the traditional Russian zone. Currently, it is quite difficult to choose a nice and catchy domain in the .RU zone, as well as in the .РФ zone.
The representative of the company “Ru-Center” believes that 1-2 million USD is needed to launch a new domain. Processing the ICANN application will cost approximately $185,000, he said, and funds will also need to be provided to support the functioning of the domains.
Currently, more than 784 thousand domain names are registered in the national Cyrillic zone .РФ. The basic “Latin” zone .RU already boasts 4.465 million registered names, the somewhat outdated zone .SU (Soviet Union) has 120 thousand. domains. It is quite likely that the emergence of a new domain will again stir up the market and also get a chance to succeed. In addition to catchy names, the use of Cyrillic in the domain name can also be another factor for successful promotion in the TOP search engines.
