Microsoft is convinced that the popular mail service Gmail copies its users’ emails, based on which it then sends them individual advertising. Correspondent Sergey Tkachuk tried to answer the question of why Microsoft attacked Google with criticism and whether this copying of e-mails can be considered an invasion of privacy.
If you mention, for example, the word “cat” in your e-mail correspondence, you will immediately receive an advertisement for cat food. When you enter the word “Mercedes” you will receive an advertisement for cars of this well-known brand. According to Microsoft, by copying users’ emails, Google obtains keywords and then sends relevant targeted advertising, which (according to Microsoft) can be considered an invasion of privacy.
At Google , they deny all allegations and say they do not use confidential information, including information about race, religion or sexual orientation.
The director of the GURU cooperation explains that it is quite difficult to accuse Google of violating privacy. First, when you sign up for Gmail, you agree to the proposed terms. And secondly, e-mails are copied by a robot, which does not allow to identify the specific user.
User information is archived anonymously. This usually means that if information is extracted from any database, then it is only possible to find that a person bought something at some point during the month, corresponded with friends about that purchase, etc. But connecting to a specific profile of a person is not easy. In fact, it is about protecting private data.
According to Senator Ruslan Gattarov, Google is not the only company that copies users’ email communications. It is safe to say that all free mail servers are engaged in a similar practice. Otherwise, it wouldn’t even be possible.
It’s hard to imagine that a company that wants to make money would create such a great convenience service for the reason that everyone could use it and the company didn’t get anything out of it. That’s not really the case. The company then sells the advertising, at a very high price. They claim that the ad will not be published to everyone. They will offer your advertisement to those who are interested in it. The effect from advertising is then very high.
One of the Internet specialists claims that as far as the specific war declared by Microsoft on Google is concerned, it is nothing out of the ordinary. It is a common fight for a place under the sun. Hundreds of people use online products from Microsoft, Google, Apple. Obviously, all these companies are accusing and suing each other over various patents. This is common practice at the high level of the IT industry. And it’s always been that way.
Besides the war with Google, Microsoft also actively offers the use of its own Outlook.com service, claiming that it does not copy any mail. This is understandable, because Microsoft makes money primarily from the sale of software.
